Haiti ist heute ein Land, was sich gar nicht mehr selbst durch eigene Wirtschaft erhalten kann. Besonders seit dem Erdbeben sind ihm sowohl die politischen, sozialen wie auch wirtschaftlichen Infrastrukturen. Hauptsächlich die Hilfsorganisationen, UNO, usw sorgen für eine Art von Ersatzwirtschaft. Lokale Initiativen gibt es wenige, aber es hängt viel davon ab, dass diese ihre Ziele für die Menschen dort erreichen können, insofern sie nicht einfach selbstbezogen sind. 

Die grossen Fragen für das Land und für die bestehende Kultur scheinen mir folgende zu sein: 

1. Die Aufforstung. Haiti hat nur noch zwischen 5 und 10% Wald, die Dominikanische Republik nebenan, dagegen, ist durch die laufende Aufforstung noch weitgehend erhalten. Nur so kann der Erosion, Austrocknung, Versiegen der Quellen entgegengewirkt werden.

2. Recycling und Müllentsorgung. Zur Zeit blockiert der Müll die Flüsse, die Regenwasserentsorgung und Strassen und liegt überall verstreut. Das Wasser stagniert, lässt Mücken und Ungeziefer sich vermehren, was zum Verbreiten der Krankheiten massgeblich beiträgt. 

3. Kanalisation, die entweder nur dürftig oder gar nicht existiert. 

4. Wasser. Das Wasser ist weitgehend untrinkbar und natürliche Quellen der Bevölkerung kaum mehr zugänglich. 

5. Gesprächskultur und Lokale Entscheidungsstrukturen. Diese fehlen gänzlich und man schaut machtlos zum Präsidenten oder den Abgeordneten. 

6. Erziehung und Bewusstseinsbildung. 

Im Sommer haben wir in Idem 2 Workcamps an zwei Schulen abgehalten. Sie waren einen ersten Schritt in der Realisierung der viel grösseren Initiative einer internationalen Jugendtagung 2013, in der viele solche Projekte eingebunden werden können.

Today Haiti is a country that can no longer sustain itself through its own economy. Particularly after the earthquake in January 2010 the social, political and economic structures broke down almost completely. It is predominantly the NGO's of international development aid that keep some sort of commerce going. There are few local initiatives, but much depends upon these being able to achieve the aims they have set for the population there.

The most urgent questions for the country and culture there at the moment seem to me the following. 

1. Reforestation. Haiti has between 5 and 10% of its forests left, which the Dominican Republic next door is still largely covered in trees through its efforts at maintaining the woods. It is only in this manner that one can fight the growing erosion droughts and drying up of the sources. 

2. Recycling and garbage disposal. There is rubbish everywhere, blocking waterways, drains and culverts and roadways. The water stagnates in puddles on the roadside, a breeding ground for mosquitos and other carriers of disease. 

3. Sanitation. Toilet facilities are either extremely inadequate or not available at all. 

4. A culture of conversation. There are no structures for local decision-making. Everyone looks to the government for answers. 

5. Water. The water is largely undrinkable and polluted and the natural sources that were there dried up or unavailable to the population. 

6. Education and awareness-building. 

Last July Idem held two work camps at two different schools there. They were the first step in realizing a much bigger initiative, namely the organization of an international Youth Conference in Haiti in 2013, in which many such projects could be included and supported.
